Summer Convention - Warsaw 2010

A traditional summer meeting of the people treating for Lyme disease and all well-wishers of our movement will took place on 2010, August 27th to 29th.

Place of meeting:
"Patron" Hotel placed on the Center of the Child Health territory, Al. Dzieci Polskich 20.
A hotel booking should be done personally as soon as possible, with giving your names and the password "zjazd borelioza" (meaning `Lyme disease convention`), so that we can find out if the number reserved by an Association is adequate, or shall we reserve more. All the rooms have kettles, some of them have fridges. You can also buy a breakfast in a restaurant. There is a possibility of buying a dinner in that restaurant, which is on-site.

Audience hall and car park:
Audience hall, with the discussion panels, will be prepared for about 80 people, and the convention is adjusted to be a set of casual meetings. Car park is 24/7 guarded, and, unfortunately, chargeable.

The program:
We are planning several lectures about tick-borne diseases, e.g. "Understanding of the Lyme disease symptoms" by Artur Klimaszewski. We will prepare the exact Saturday`s program in the following days. As usually, Friday will be the day of arrivals, accommodation and individual meetings. Sunday is the farewell day.

A competition for children:
Traditionally, we are organizing a competition for children. However, this time it won`t be an art contest; we`re waiting for an epigram, or a short (up to 8 lines) poem which will warn against the ticks. Texts can be sent to our e-mail address or delivered to the convention. The best artworks will be rewarded and published on our website.

Appearance declaration:
We are waiting for an information via e-mail or telephone (stowarzyszenie.borelioza@gmail.com; 692 890 751).

We sincerely invite everyone interested in the problems of the Lyme disease.

A training in Zielona Góra

On the June 17th, in the WOMP in Zielona Góra, a training for the doctors took place. The leading issue was "Biological factors in the workplaces: Tick-borne diseases - symptoms, treating, prevention."

The lecture was leaded by mrs Elżbieta Dąbek, a medical doctor specialized in contagious illnesses. It was attended by about 60 doctors from Zielona Góra and its surroundings, especially doctors specialized in workplaces medicine.

They have learned about the issues like Lyme disease and the tick-borne diseases treatment methods elaborated by the doctor J. J. Burrascano, or the medical reports about the effectiveness of a long-term treatment with a combination of medicines.

"Usage of a long-term treatment is not recommended by most of doctors, especially those connected with leading clinics, but it also is not FORBIDDEN. It is the doctor who decides how to treat a patient. Nowadays a long-term and troublesome (side-effects) antibiotics treatment isn`t being undermined e.g. in case of tuberculosis. [...] The doctor have to decide of the way of treating the patient, because, for a several years, it may occur that the long-term, complex treatment of the Lyme disease and co-infections is an effective and that it`s the only correct method."

ILADS conference in London - summary

The first European conference relevant to the Lyme disease and co-infections treating and diagnosing took place in London, on June 12th, 2010. It was directed especially to the doctors involved with these issues. There were doctors from several countries, like Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium or Poland participating.

The organizers provided the lectures by the most active and experienced ILADS doctors from the USA, especially the ILADS president, Robert Bransfield, ILADS vice-president, Leo J. Shea, and also Ann Corson, Raphael Stricker and Richard Horowitz.

The first lecture was about the imperfection of the laboratory tests and the methods of diagnosing Lyme disease and the co-infections in the USA. Robert Bransfield was talking about the connection between the psychological diseases and the bacterial infections, and also about the influence of those infections on the immunological system functioning. There was also some interesting data relevant to the practical problems with diagnosing of the Lyme disease and the neurological disorders done by the illness presented.

During the afternoon session there was presented the information about passing the bacterial infection by the pregnant women. The last lectures were about the difficulties during the Lyme disease and co-infections treatment. Ann Corson was talking about her experience with children treating. David C. Martz talked about the connections between the Lyme disease and falling ill with ALS, SM and Parkinson disease. Richard Horowitz had a lecture about the complexity of the treatment and the factors that hamper the succeeding.

Also our European visitors presented their lectures - inter alia Carsten Nicolas, the president of the Center of Lyme disease Treating from Augsburg and the French professor, Christian Perrone.

First of that kind in Poland...

September 24th, in Bielsko Biała a first big-scale training of the family-doctors, which was related to ILADS methods treatment took place. It was leaded by one of a very few Polish doctors treating with the ILADS methods.
All the doctors participating in the meeting had a possibility to learn about the clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease and coinfections, the problem of the clinical tests` imperfection and the methods of treating the patient with tick`s bite and appear of erythema migrans, or the other symptoms of this disease.
The attention was put especially to the topics like myths about the time needed to be infected by a tick implanted into a skin, the frequency of erythema`s appearing, the reliability of Elisa tests, etc. There were also the reasons for the controversy about the treatment presented, which are the picture of a dispute between ILADS and IDSA medical organizations.

Than, as an example for the effectiveness of the ILADS treating methods, a patient who had Multiple Sclerosis diagnosed presented her story and showed her before and after-treatment findings. Before the antibiotic treatment she was in poor condition, she had a lot of demyelinization points in her brain. She didn`t remember having a tick`s bite or a erythema migrans; she was also seronegative. After a few months of treatment all the demyelinization changes has ascended and the patient started to function and to live actively again.

Also the vice-president of our Association had a lecture. She presented the reasons of the Association`s founding, it`s goals, activities, achievements and plans. She talked about lowering the statistics, about the loneliness and incomprehension feeling which touches the patients who look for the diagnosis via the medical service and about the huge meaning of the supporting groups for the protractedly-ill patients. She also pointed out the new, modern type of patient: the e-patient - a person, who is able to learn about his or her indisposition on their own using the publications which are available in the Internet. That kind of person out of the applicant becomes a partner of the doctor during the treatment process and might give him helpful suggestions about the illness and the treatment.

At the end the new movie of Bada UK organization, "One tick away" was screened.
The representatives of a firm which organized the meeting admitted, that it was the first time the doctors asked for the training about the treatment. That shows how huge the problem is. There were 43 family-doctors from Bielsko Biała participating in that event. We are already planning that kind of trainings in the other cities of south Poland. We hope, that this event will be an example for the rest of the country.

Note

Doctors from Poland who are interested in treating Lyme disease with the ILADS methods may go after a 2- or 3-weeks medical training in the USA. More information is available on the ILADS website.
Doctors may ask individually for the training. They should speak English fluently. The Lyme disease Association may write a letter supporting the particular doctor in order to gain the resources that may defray the costs of the training.

Help Caroline

Despite her being only 13, she is already heavily life-experienced. First sudden death of her mother, than her father`s sickness, that made him unable to take care of his nine orphaned children.
Caroline`s oldest sister didn`t allow her siblings to be separated and be taken to the orphanage - thanks to her, the family is still together. Unfortunately, they`re facing financial problems regularly, sometimes it`s even hard to pay for food. To make things worse, two years ago Caroline begun to suffer from Lyme disease.

High temperature at first, vertigos, fainting, and - after a few days in hospital - a wheelchair. The girl haven`t been walking for four months. The diagnosis was made in the next hospital - it was a neurotic appearance of Lyme disease.
After standard treatment, three days after going back home she has suffered another disease`s attack - a facial nerve paralysis, fainting and hospital again. Then a knee surgery and another fainting. Caroline couldn`t manage those miseries - she has got into depression. A psychologist suggested her an individual teaching at home.
While she was starting recovering her psychical balance, Lyme disease has shown up again - this time it attacked her eyes with eyes aches and photophobia, which interfered with her studying and everyday functioning. The treatment wasn`t long enough to be helpful of course.
In June 2009, thanks to the help of The Lime Disease Association and many kind people she has got in touch with a doctor using ILADS methods. Unfortunately, this treatment is really expensive and beyond this family`s capabilities.
We can help Caroline with fighting the disease which destroys her childhood! She has her own account in the Foundation for Children "Help on Time" (Warsaw, Łomiańska 5).

All the material help can be sent onto an account:

Information Points

After over a year of our information points functioning, which are also supporting groups for patients, we decided to look a little closer to their work. Almost 20 points of ours had received over a thousand of e-mails, especially from people looking for support or advices about their treatment, from those looking for reasons of their troubles, but also from doctors and journalists interested in the subject of the tick-borne diseases.
We hope, that no e-mail was left without an answer, but we still realize, that we`re not always able to help you in a hundred percent. We don`t do diagnosis, we don`t know all about the quality of the laboratory tests in Poland, it`s sometimes hard to recommend a doctor knowing the Lyme disease problem who would have been near the patient.
After analyzing the numbers of e-mails sent to the particular points we can try to arrange them more rationally. Soon some of the points, which are situated near to each other will be joined, maybe we`ll open the new ones in the parts of the country where we didn`t had them.
We would like to thank everyone who leads a information point or a supporting group. We hope they`re all satisfied with the work they do, because it`s really devoting and needs much involvement, especially it`s done for free.
We don`t forget about those who do it on their own. We all have the same purposes: to warn people from the danger of infected ticks, to support the patients and share with them with our experience, to claim effective treatment from the medical service. Thank you once again - your activity is priceless.

Warsaw 2009 - summary

For the "old" members the meeting started on Friday, July 31st in "Adara" dormitory, where All the participants were accommodated. First integration meeting lasted long night hours.
The official summary`s inauguration took place on Saturday, August 1st in the Warsaw University of Life Sciences` main assembly hall. Because of problems with arrival on time of some of our speakers, we had to threw away the summary`s program. We begun with projecting "One tick away", a film by a British Lyme disease Assotiation.

As soon as all the participants have managed to arrive, the lectures began. First of all, vice-president of our Association, Katarzyna Kmieć, presented the basic information about the Lyme disease - mostly for those, who are in the beginning of their treatment.
Next, Agata Kozak was speaking about the influence of Lyme disease for human psyche and about dealing with it.
Afterwards, representatives of Synevo laboratories chain presented the LTT test and its help, in their opinion, in monitoring the disease.
During one of the presentations we had some unexpected attractions - the fire alarm went on and we had to leave the building for a while. Evacuation passed unexpectedly quick, without any panic and the Protection firm worker was helped with turning off the alarm by... one of our summary participants :)

The next presentation concerned all the types of anti-ticks preparations and the ways of protecting ourselves from ticks. It was presented by our Association`s member, Renata Rojek.
We also had a very interesting presentation "Rehabilitation as an important part of Lyme disease treatment" by a rehabilitations doctor, Anna Bogdańska. We often forget, that the treatment is more difficult without physical exercises.
Tomasz Woźniak presented an offer of an Internet Medical Site "Hylostet" shortly.
Than, after a lunch break, the last lecture of this summary took place. Doctor Beata Werbowy was speaking about difficulties during Lyme disease and co-infections treatment. She came to Warsaw for a few hours only, so that she could present us, as much as she could, the most important problems which are occurring during the treatment - we`re very grateful to her for that.

The meeting finished about 6 p.m., about 150 people participated. During the lectures there were posters, leaflets, and other materials were distributed. Also our first book publication, "Lyme disease and Co-infections" was presented.
There was also a possibility of taking a sample of blood and sending it to laboratories in Lublin and Poznań for tests. It was possible thanks to Mrs. Jadwiga Kłys` laboratory in Warsaw.

The later part of our event took place in the Ikar café at the University`s campus. We determined the results of a children contest "Ticks - Monsters of the Forests". You can see all the artworks here: Children`s work gallery
Adults took part in a "Lyme disease school-test". The finalists were: Ewa475, Swigonka and Stachenka, who finally won the competition. Congratulations :)
Both children and adults got attractive awards.

The talks and the meetings were continued in the rooms of Adara till late hours, cause there`s nothing better than that kind of "family". Who would understand you better, than someone who experienced the same thing you did? Some of us have been fighting the disease since months or years. They share with their knowledge and experience.

We would like to thank everyone who helped in any possible way with organizing this summary. We also thank all speakers and the participants. We believe, that we`ll meet in such a big group also the next year.

Tick-borne diseases symposium in Warsaw

On 28th March a meeting for doctors called Tick-borne Diseases Academy took place in Warsaw. The organizers: Medical Education Centre and partners - BAXTER as well as CBDNA and EUROIMMUN Polska as sponsors invited some members of our Association to the meeting.
Presentations were given by scientists and doctors actively dealing with tick-borne diseases. The main issue, however, was the problem of tick-borne encephalitis - its symptoms and treatment - and Lyme disease. The burning problem of co-infections was left untouched. The problems connected with Lyme disease were unfortunately shown only in the light of the standards currently valid in Poland. In our opinion - doctors who participated in the symposium were told nothing new concerning symptoms, diagnosis or treatment of Lyme disease.
The meeting did not meet our expectations as there were only not scientifically confirmed opinions repeated, the procedures used widely in Poland were glorified and said to be 100% efficient, whereas not only did they not help many of us but also worsened their health condition through spreading bacteria all over their bodies.
In conclusion we can repeat what we heard from the participants: "we are still on the way" and "we still do not know much about this disease".
